Shabana’s National Super League title hopes suffered a huge setback after they were defeated 2-1 by arch-rivals Murang’a Seal on Sunday, July 2, 2023, at St. Sebastian Park.

Tore Bobe needed to take a point from the match and run with the title, but the loss means that the winner will now be decided on the final matchday.

Goals

Meanwhile, Murang’a Seal broke the deadlock in the seventh minute when Fabian Adikiny scored from close range to stun the ambitious visitors.

Shabana thought they had found the equalizer in the 21st minute when Peter Ongechi found the back of the net, but the goal was ruled out for offside.

The home side scored the second in the 36th minute when Yusuf Ally struck to stun Shabana even more. Goalkeeper Mustapha Oduor, who has been very impressive for Tore Bobe, stood no chance as the well-taken shot landed in the top corner.

In the 55th minute, Tore Bobe came close to halving the deficit, but Nehemiah Onchiri’s goal-bound strike was quickly cleared by Gideon Were. Finally, the Kisii-based side found the back of the net in the 68th minute when George Onyango struck.

The title race in the NSL echoes what happened in the Football Kenya Federation Premier League, in which the winner was decided on the final day. Tusker and Gor Mahia were vying for the title, and the latter finally lifted it after they were given a run for their money.

Murang’a Seal and Shabana, however, have already sealed their places in the top tier.

Meanwhile, Migori Youth secured a 1-0 win over Darajani Gogo in Kibera. The win saw Migori Youth close in on Mara Sugar as the two sides fought for promotion through the playoffs.

The all-important goal for Migori Youth was scored in the 47th minute by Ernest Oyugi. Rashid Moyo of Migori Youth and Wycliffe Omondi of Darajani Gogo were yellow-carded in the 21st and 28th minutes, respectively.

Elsewhere, the Kisumu All Stars defeated the Kibera Black Stars 2-1. Devan Omondi scored in the sixth and 39th minutes to register a brace, while the All Stars’ goal was scored by Kelvin Mwangi.

Kevin Owino from the Black Stars side was the only player who was cautioned in the match.

Mwatate United claimed a 3-1 win over struggling Vihiga United, with Alvin Ngoto scoring a hat trick in the fourth, 55th, and 87th minutes. Amos Kigadi scored the goal for United in the 7th minute.

Mwatate United’s Brian Solomon and Oscar Mwanambisi of Vihiga United were the players who entered the referee’s books in the 19th and 31st minutes, respectively.

Shared spoils

Finally, at Mbaraki Stadium, Mombasa Elite and Naivas FC shared points after a 2-2 draw. John Kelwish scored the opening goal for Naivas in the fifth minute before the home side equalized in the 14th minute through Brian Mate.

Mate scored to put Mombasa Ellite ahead in the 23rd minute, but they were pegged back when the visitors restored parity in the 77th minute, with Ken Mutembei finding the back of the net.

Shariff Majabe of Mombasa Ellite was yellow-carded in the 54th minute for a reckless tackle. David Oduor was cautioned in the 65th minute before another card was flashed for Mate in the 71st minute for simulation.

The focus now shifts to the final matchday, with the title up for grabs as well as the playoff spot between Migori Youth and Mara Sugar.
