Senate committee concluded the hearing of impeached Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza at 2:00 am Thursday, December 29, 2022.
The 11-member committee hearing Kawira’s impeachment started the sittings on Monday. On Wednesday, the committee burned the midnight oil to conclude the hearing.
The committee’s chairperson Kakamega senator Boni Khalwale announced that they concluded the hearing at 2:00 am and proceeded to report writing.
“Albeit very late, glad to conclude (at 2.00am) the hearing of evidence in the matter of investigation into and consideration of the impeachment of H.E Kawira Mwangaza, the governor of Meru. My humblest thanx to all the members of the Senate Special Committee,” Khalwale tweeted.
First governor impeached
Embattled Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza became the first county boss to be impeached since the August 9, 2022, general election.
On December 14, 2022, 67 out of 69 Members of County Assembly (MCAs) in Meru voted in favour of an impeachment motion tabled by Abogeta West MCA and Minority Party Whip Dennis Kiogora.
The MCAs wanted Kawira out of office over alleged gross misconduct, the appointment of her husband to the county office and claims over the dismissal of county officers.
Kawira’s fate now lies in the hands of senators. The Senate will then vote to either uphold or overturn the impeachment.
