Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Party leader Raila Odinga says that if elected president in the August polls, he will ensure Harambee Stars competes at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) games.
Odinga while congratulating the Senegal team for bagging the AFCON title on Sunday after a 4-2 win against Egypt said his administration will be keen on fostering small community clubs.
“Congratulations Senegal on winning #AFCON2021 I promise the legion of Kenyan soccer fans that under my administration Harambee stars will be at the next #Afcon,” the former Prime Minister wrote on Twitter.
“We’ll invest in football starting with grassroots/mtaani and community clubs. #Inawezekana,” he added.
Senegal’s Sadio Mane made up for a first-half penalty miss by converting the winning spot-kick in a penalty shoot-out against the seven-time champions.
The two sides were locked at 0-0 after extra-time in the final but Mane held his nerve in the shoot-out which his team won 4-2.
Mane had squandered the chance to put Senegal ahead inside seven minutes in Yaounde when his penalty was saved by Egypt goalkeeper Mohamed Abou Gabal.
Raila recently vowed that under his administration, Harambee Stars would be fully supported to enable it in competitions such as the World Cup.
“Small islands like Comoros and countries like Burkina Faso are in Cameroon playing at the Nations Cup yet Kenya is not there. When the World Cup is staged, Kenya is never there,” Raila told Maa community leaders in January.
He added: “ I pledge that when I get there, Kenya will play at the Nations Cup and World Cup.”
