Migori county Governor Zachary Okoth Obado this morning surrendered himself to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) after the DPP Noordin Haji ordered his arrest yesterday over allegations on embezzlement of over Ksh. 73 million funds meant for the county development.
Obado was accompanied four children alongside other people accused in the probe. They are being grilled at the EACC offices in Kisii town and later on expected to be arraigned in court to answer the charges against them.
Dpp Haji in a press statement released yesterday said that after cross checking the files presented to him by EACC Obado received a sum amounting to Ksh.73M by using companies registered under his childrens’ names. The companies are said to have traded with the county government of Migori in the financial years of 2013/2014 and 2016/2017.
According to the DPP the money trail showed that more than Ksh. 38M was directed to accounts that are held by his children Achola Dan Okoth, Susan Scarlet Okoth and Jerry Zachary Okoth. The money is alleged to have been used to support the children in their studies and also payment of medical bills abroad. He is also suspected to have used the other amount to buy two motor vehicles.
Governor Obado has previously found himself on the wrong side of the law in several incidents most of which cases are pending in the courts. The Governor is alleged to have played a key role in the murder of Rongo University student Sharon Otieno and his arrest alongside his three children is a blow to the family.
The DPP said in the statement that having checked through the files he is highly convinced and confident enough that the governor is liable to face the full force of the law over embezzlement of public funds. Alongside him are nine other individuals who will be arraigned in court to answer different charges.
