I want to be Raila’s running mate – Alfred Mutua

Written by on 10 April 2022

Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua now says he is offering himself as Raila Odinga’s running mate in the Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya alliance.

Mutua, who spoke on Sunday after a meeting with Maendeleo Chap Chap Party Governing Council, said he has what it takes to deputise the ODM leader.

“With the urging of my party members, I present myself for consideration for the position of deputy president to Jakom Raila Odinga. I have what it takes to deputise him,” Mutua said.

At the same time, the governor said Raila deserved to be president having worked for it for a long time.

“We have unanimously agreed to support the presidency of  Raila Odinga and the Azimio umbrella. Truth be told, it is his time.

“Just like it was Nelson Mandela’s time on May 10, 1994,  this August 9, 2022 elections is Raila’s time,” he said.

Mutua’s sentiments come days after he lamented that his party and eight others were being sidelined in the alliance in favour of ODM, Wiper, and Jubilee.

Speaking last week, Mutua said there was a lack of trust in the alliance and disrespect for small parties.

“What we want is to be treated with respect because we are doing this for Raila Odinga but we will not agree to be tricked and played and then we end up not being on the ballot.

“That in a nutshell there is lack of trust and we if that just at this time when they need us they are playing us what will they do to us when we are already inside,” Mutua said.

He further said he did not know what his party signed during the unveiling of Raila as the alliance’s presidential candidate on March 12.

“We feel that we have been taken for granted and as the party leader of Maendeleo Chap Chap I have not seen that document. Everything was done in a hurry,” he said.
