Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) commissioners are set to receive the first batch of ballot papers at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) on Thursday, July 7.

IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati said other ballot papers will be arriving in Nairobi in the coming days.

“The ballot papers are being printed in Greece. The last ballot papers to be received will be those of the presidential election,” Chebukati said during a forum in Nairobi on Thursday.

He said the tender for ballot printing was done in a transparent manner.

“The tender was done in an open manner and the commissioners were not involved. It is a management issue,” he stated.

He further dismissed allegations that there were plans to print extra ballot papers, especially for the presidential election.

“There are no extra ballot papers. We have printed enough ballot papers for the registered voters only and any spoiled votes will be accommodated because we do not expect a 100 per cent turn out,” he added.

The IEBC boss also confirmed that the commission is ready to conduct the August 9 polls and is currently recruiting staff who will help in delivering the election.

“We are ready for the election. We are currently recruiting 46000 presiding officers, their deputies, and four clerks per polling station. There will be also two police officers manning every polling station,” he stated.

He urged candidates to avail agents to receive the results once the voting is complete.

We call on the candidates to have their agents in every polling station. The media is allowed to report the results and not declare them. We will just be comparing notes,” he said.
